CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

ON FRIDAY, CAT ordered her dinner from the cookshop in Bedford Street. A little after midday, the porter’s boy brought up the dishes to her. She was not in the Drawing Office but in her own apartments, struggling to pack her belongings. There was a letter propped against one of the dishes.

‘What’s this?’

‘A boy brought it, mistress,’ Josh said. ‘He’s below, waiting for an answer.’

Cat tore the letter open. The writing was unfamiliar to her.

Madam

Forgive me if, in the urgency of my passion when we last met, I spoke too bluntly for a lady’s ear. I could not restrain myself. I am a plain man, and I fear I lack the graces of a lover. But you must not doubt my sincerity or my devotion. My dearest hope is that you will allow me to plead my suit anew on your return to these shores. Pray send word of your route so that I may write to you.
