Gianni and Dante were finally awake and making their way toward the coffee pot.

“Wanna talk about last night?” Gianni asked as he leaned against the counter.

“Yeah, I think I do,” Mickey answered. “Marigold dropped a bomb on me. She’s pregnant.”

“That little—”

“Hey,” Mickey cut in, “it takes two to tango. I only have myself to blame.”

“You’ll have the money to take care of it,” Dante said dismissively. “As soon as we do this job, you can get rid of it. What does an abortion cost these days? About two-fifty?”

Gianni turned to glare at Dante.

“What?” Dante asked, throwing up his hands. “It ain’t like Marigold can raise a kid. She’s borderline retarded herself.”

This time Mickey shocked them by not coming to her defense. “It’s my kid, too, and I intend to raise it right. Gianni, you and Gia had good parents. They loved you, man, and wanted the best for you. Dante and I basically raised ourselves. There’s more to life than living from one petty crime to the next. I’d like for my kid to have stability.”

“I can respect that, man,” Gianni said, “but with Marigold? Dude, she’ll screw ya over every chance she gets.”

“I don’t want to talk about it anymore,” Mickey said adamantly. “But I’ll tell you both this, I’m out. The burglary isn’t worth the risk, not with a kid on the way. I’ve been having bad vibes anyway.”

“What the—?” Dante shouted, pounding his fist against the flimsy paneled wall.

“Take a few minutes and think about it,” Mickey said. “Really think about it. I know you believe this is planned out like a professional bank heist, but it isn’t. There’s so much room for error that it’s destined to fail. We’re swimming with sharks now. It isn’t a little pond where we’re the big fish anymore, this is the real deal. Trust me, somebody’s going to prison, and it’s not going to be me.”

“Reno’s gonna shit a brick,” Gianni announced frantically. “And I’m not gonna be the one to drop the bomb on him. You are.”

“Aren’t you guys late to work?” Mickey asked.

Gianni checked his watch and motioned for Dante to head down the hall. “He’s right, we’re late. When are ya gonna tell him, Mickey?”

“I’ll wait around until the breakfast crowd thins out. I’ve got to tell Marigold first. Hopefully she’ll see things the way I do.”
