NINE

“You have a very beautiful garden,” Nico said. He was sitting with the Rosatis on the wide stone-paved patio in the back of their house. OneWag was at his feet. They were surrounded by a vast array of terra-cotta pots filled with peonies and roses and plants Nico couldn’t name.

Gianna pressed her hand to her chest. She was wearing a floral skirt with a frilly white blouse. “Thank you.” An armada of clouds was now floating in from the north, mitigating the sun’s heat. Gianna had offered him a coffee he’d turned down. She had brought out a bowl of water the dog ignored.

“He just drank,” Nico somehow felt compelled to say.

“Well, just in case,” Gianna said in a chipper voice. “We greatly appreciate you taking the time to see us.” Her husband sat a few feet apart from her with what Nico thought was a patient expression on his face.

“My wife is extremely upset by Nora’s death, which is understandable as they were great friends, but it has led her to worry that Maresciallo Perillo will not find the killer.”

Nico looked at Federico. “Do you have the same worry?”

“I have full faith in the maresciallo, but we have heard that you have helped him in the past and Gianna—”

Gianna reached over and tapped his knee. “Please let me speak for myself.” She turned to Nico with an eager face. “A New York detective obviously has much more experience in solving murders than a maresciallo of the carabinieri in charge of a rural area. Please reassure me that you are involved in the investigation.”

“I have no legal status here. I can only give advice. I do have a question for you, Signor Rosati, if you don’t mind.”

“Please ask whatever you wish,” Federico said. “We are here to help.”

“Thank you. Last week you were overheard on the grounds of the villa giving Nora what our witness said sounded like a lecture. Something about tradition?”

“Ah, yes, I was quite upset with Nora. I would say it was more of a sermon than a lecture. She had just told me she was selling the property. I was aghast at first and then I tried to have her see reason. Yes, I spoke about the value of tradition, about the joy the land and the villa had given generations of her family, how it had fed them.

“She didn’t need to sell the property. She had enough money. I bombarded her with my self-righteous words. I was quite upset. Nora could have walked away, but she listened patiently. When I finally asked her to give me a reason for selling, she said what she did with her property was none of my business.”

“That was a bit rough.” Nico was perplexed by Federico. His retelling of what clearly had been an emotional moment seemed to have no feeling behind it.

“Nora was not tenderhearted, Signor Doyle. She was right. It was none of my business.”

Gianna reached behind her and stroked her husband’s knee. “You were upset for your father.
