Chapter Forty

The next morning Kate spent extra time on her clothes and hair. She walked into the kitchen just as Greer was coming in from the back.

“Well,” her mother noticed. “Don’t you look nice.”

“Thank you.” She blushed. “Good morning, Greer.”

“Morning.”

They reached for the coffee at the same time. Greer poured for them both. Her mother asked if she’d be home for dinner.

“I don’t know. I haven’t talked to Jason yet so I don’t know what we’re doing. I’ll let you know.”

“Well, if you’re going to be here could you pick something up?”

“Sure. Anything in particular?”

Her mother waved a hand. “Greer, honey, what do you feel like?”

“Anything.”

“Pizza?” Kate ventured.

“That’d be great.”

“What do you want on it?”

“Anything but masgouf.”

“What’s that?”

“This awful carp they grill in Iraq. Tastes like wet cardboard.”

“Got it. Hold the masgouf.”

She looked in the cupboard for peanuts. “Mom, have you fed the birds?”

“Not yet. There’s a new bag in the pantry.”

She found the nuts and was tickled when Greer followed her to the feeder.

“You kept running out on me last night. I never got to ask why you want to be a paramedic.”

She grinned. “I love all those Emergency Room shows. Dad faints and Jason gags but I can’t think of anything more exciting than saving someone’s life. I mean, what a rush, to make such a difference.”

“Then why don’t you?”

“Why don’t I what?”

“Be a paramedic.”

A jay landed near the feeder. Kate held a peanut to it.

“Come on,” she coaxed. To Greer she said, “And waste a perfectly good business degree? Come on.” She extended the peanut farther. “Besides, I probably couldn’t pass the physical. You have to be in pretty good shape.”

The jay cocked its head. It hopped a few steps closer.
