CHAPTER 14
THE TRAIL
It took several hard tugs, but finally the wiring bundle came loose from under the dash panel of the small airplane. Jospair looked at the bunch of multi-colored wiring in his hand. He didnât know much about aircraft, but he was confident that these separated wires would render the planeâs radio permanently out of action. No one is calling anyone from this radio, he thought with confidence.
Jospair dropped the bundle on the ground. Heâd initially thought about puncturing the planes tires also, but changed his mind and lifted the engine cowling instead, removing the coil wire. After all, he may have use for the plane later and did not want it entirely incapacitated. He stuck the thick black wire into his pocket. With this done, he rummaged through the plane, looking for weapons, but found none. Grunting his approval at this, he turned back to the Jeep which was parked near the hangar. It had been a stroke of luck, his discovering the small airstrip on the bluff--a total accident.
After disposing of the BLM rangerâs body and vehicle in the river, Jospair had left Sand Wash in his SUV, intending to drive back along the rough four-wheel-drive trail, trying to spot then intercept the river guide Kimber somewhere between the wash and the boat ramp miles downriver. He was certain he had hit the man with at least one bullet, because heâd seen Kimber flinch involuntarily as he dove into his boat. It was something Jospair had witnessed many times before, thus, he recognized it for what it was. He also knew he had hit the boat and the motor with several bullets, hopefully damaging it severely. Maybe the man is already dead, he thought.
Jospair would have preferred not to have killed the man until the guide told him about the money, and he knew the man would have told him eventually--Jospairâs powers of âpersuasionâ being what they were. He shrugged as he thought about it. If heâs dead, so be it, but I need to make sure one way or the other. What was that American term? Ah yes, âtie up a loose end.â
Driving slowly over the rough road in the darkness, Jospair had noticed the off-shoot access road climbing the bluff to the right in the headlights of the Jeep at the last second. He made a snap decision to take the trail upward to higher ground in an attempt to possibly spot the boat on the river in the moonlight.
It was a tough climb for the small V-8 engine and it strained to get to the top, the sound carrying for some distance. When his vehicle exited the timber and brush at the top edge of the plateau onto open ground, Jospair realized instantly that his headlights could be seen for miles. He turned them off, driving slowly with only the light from the moon and stars to guide him. Therefore, he didnât see the hanger or the small plane until he was very close to both.
