Abby

Abby woke from the best sleep she ever had. No nightmares, no dreams about final exams in classes she didn’t know she’d signed up for. She felt like she’d been asleep for years.

She didn’t feel guilty about it either. Most mornings she’d have scrambled for the alarm clock to see how late she was for work, but not today. Today she didn’t care how late she was. That was their problem. In fact, she didn’t think she’d bother going to work today at all. Why should she? It was her life, and she was going to do whatever she wanted. For too many years she’d spent too much time obsessing over what other people thought about her. Donald. Her parents.

Milos.

Milos. She stretched and smiled. The mattress rubbed temptingly against her skin. That was one obsession she didn’t mind. Maybe she’d go to work today after all. Only she wouldn’t bother going to her office. Instead, she’d go straight to Milos’s, strip them both, and give him the fucking she deserved.

She stretched a second time. Where the hell was she, anyway? This wasn’t her bedroom. This wasn’t any place she remembered at all. The room was small, and very dark. And she wasn’t sleeping on a bed, just a mattress on the floor. In a closet. What the hell kind of place was this, anyway?

She was very hungry.

She tried the knob on the door beside the mattress, but it was locked. Angry, she pulled on the knob hard. Wood splintered, and the frame came off the side of the wall, but the door only opened about six inches before jamming against the mattress. Cheap construction. What else could you expect from a hotel, or whatever it was, with rooms the size of closets.

Her anger growing, she yanked the flimsy door off its hinges and threw it on the mattress behind her.

Beyond the door was a dark basement. Concrete walls and floor, racks of metal shelves filled with bins and boxes, an unlit furnace. Fifteen hundred square feet at least, with the closet she’d just left built into one corner. Though there were no windows or lights, she could see the stairs on the other side of the room easily.

She didn’t think about that—she just went up the stairs. Her hunger was gnawing at her stomach now, trying to claw its way out. Her mood grew fouler.

Another lock blocked her at the top of the stairs. Putting her shoulder to the door, she shoved it open. She’d always been too slight to try smashing doors open, and now she’d done it twice.

She enjoyed the feeling.

The room beyond was light and airy. A large space, nearly as large as the basement. And much better lit. Before Abby could even make sense of her surroundings, she found herself overcome by the brightness. She threw an arm up to shield herself from the glare, but found she had to close her eyes too. It was like she’d just come up from the bottom of a cave.
