Damieren

The door to the dining hall slammed closed and both of them flinched. Ren hadn’t released her hand since they had been quickly ushered from the temple. Carys had begged and pleaded to know what was happening and while Ren wished he could have given her the comfort she deserved, he had no idea how it happened—how Dagan had been able to penetrate the wards, the veil. All of it. There was no comfort. It was purely panic. And when Orlong and Nedra approached them with enraged looks on their faces, Ren knew that he was done for.

He had wanted to protect her from this—had wanted to try and handle it himself, but it seemed as if his wants and desires paled in comparison to the reality of the situation.

“Would you like to explain to us why you never told anyone of the deal that you made with Dagan?” Orlong demanded, his broad hand curled tightly around the spell book Nedra had been holding not too long ago.

He could have killed Brynnick at that moment, could have beat the shit out of him for telling. But he assumed that this was the gods’ retribution, that he deserved for this to happen. If only for the fact that he had been foolish enough to make that deal with Dagan in the first place.

Carys’s head snapped in Ren’s direction, her eyes narrowed and her mouth agape. “You made a deal with him?”

He didn’t know what pained him more: the look on her face or how she seemingly recoiled from him in disgust. He felt the blow of it all in his gut and as he closed his eyes, he simply wished that he could disappear. “The day I discovered you left, Crispin offered to go with me to help me find you. Cyrus and a few other Rotican cornered us and they were about to kill me when I made the deal. I wagered… everything.”

Carys drew in a ragged breath, crossing her arms over her chest. “What is everything?” She hissed and when Ren didn’t speak, she stepped forward. “Damieren. What. Is. Everything.”

His jaw squared, teeth clenched as he stared at her with pained and lifeless eyes. “It’s you.” He wished that he were lying. He wished that he could have had more time or that he could have had more answers before having to tell her. “He wants you. I don’t know why. I’ve tried—gods, I have tried to get him to change his mind, but he is hell-bent on having you, Carys. I’m sorry.”

Tears welled up in her eyes, her body going rigid as she stared at him. “Why me? Why did you wager me?” She demanded.

At the look on her face, the anguish and fear in her eyes, he reached out to take her hand, but she jerked away from his. “Carys, I didn’t know. I didn’t know that they wanted you. They tricked me.”

“How the hell did they trick you, Ren?”

“They wanted me to offer up the thing I loved most in the world.
