17. Chess and Brainstorming

Brainstorming is probably not something for beginners, but can be used as a teaching technique with, for instance, a small group of more advanced students. Give them a complicated position and ask them to come up with as many ideas as they can.

In our games we resort to brainstorming in positions where nothing obvious comes to mind, or where we’re desperately looking for a way out of a difficult situation.

Although this is a thinking skill which will not be taught much to young beginners, it will certainly come in useful for anyone who wants to take the game seriously.
