“Did you get it?” she asked.

He nodded.

“And it’s ready to go?” she also asked.

He grinned a guilty grin.

“And you won’t say a word to anyone?” she finally asked.

“Stop droning on and on,” Hunter whispered. “As long as you keep your part of the deal, I’ll keep mine.”

At that moment, Kendall Ali stumbled into the classroom and slapped a tardy slip on Mrs. Shen’s desk.

“Dentith,” he mumbled as drool dripped down his chin. “Novocaine.”

Mrs. Shen nodded sympathetically (she’d suffered through her own dentist appointment the week before), and she pointed to an empty seat behind Riley.

As Kendall sat down, he tapped Riley on the shoulder. “I juth thaw you outthide,” he said.

“Wasn’t me,” Riley said as she pulled her hat over her face.

“I thaw you,” Kendall said, his speech slurred because of the novocaine that had numbed his mouth. “In a twee. Hat wath gween. You thwew acowns at me.”

Riley had forgotten that Green Riley was still outside, and it was obvious she was not doing as she was told (because no one told her to throw acorns at Kendall).

It wasn’t surprising. Riley herself didn’t always do what she was told.

“Oh, right,” Riley said, acting like it was no big deal. “That was me. I’m good at multitasking.”

Kendall’s eyes narrowed in suspicion.

“I can back her up on that,” Hunter said. “And Riley is so fast that she can literally be in two places at once.”

“That’s . . . bithawe,” Kendall said, meaning to say “bizarre.”

“She is the bithawest,” Hunter said in a mocking tone, making fun of both Kendall and Riley at the same time.

It didn’t work, though, because Riley took it as a compliment. She was totally in favor of being bizarre. It was nearly as good as being unpredictable.

“Thank you for saying so,” Riley said, and out of instinct, she tipped her hat.
