“Arnold can be controlling. I’ve heard even abusive.”

“To Chris?”

“She was an only child and her mother had died years before. Chris was all Arnold had and he wanted to keep her close.”

“I guess he did.”

Her smile seems sneaky. “Well, you don’t see a grandchild running around, do you?”

I’m not sure what to make of that.

She stands. Yards of fine pink silk float around her lithe body. I stand too. Obviously, she’s done.

“I’d love to chat more with you, Lisa, but I have a pre-arranged dinner date and he should be arriving soon. Let me see you out.”

I fall in step with her. “Thanks for seeing me, Marla. It’s been…well, illuminating.”

We smile at one another and she touches my arm when we reach the door.

“I’m going to give you one last tidbit before you go. You seem…interested, shall I say, in the world of Chris Singer.”

“I am.”

She shakes her head. “I’m not sure you’re doing the right thing, but if you must—Tim.”

“Tim? Who’s that?”

“Father Tim was the priest she was close to in high school. She’d go to him with all her concerns. He probably knew her better than I did, or anyone else at school.”

“Father Tim. What church was he at?”

“Don’t know but,” she chuckles, “I bet you’ll find out.” She pats my shoulder. “Good night, Lisa and good luck.”

“Good luck?”

“Yes. I think you’re going to need it.”

She shuts the door solidly behind me, but I don’t feel she closed the subject between us. There’s more to this, I’m sorry to say, but if it helps clear my husband, so be it.

I head for home, bone weary with questions pelting me from all sides. It should have been comforting to finally arrive home. It was, for a while.
