I presented an earlier version of this chapter at the 106th annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Washington, DC, where I received lively and inspirational comments from copanelists and audience members alike. An expanded version was presented to a doctoral seminar (“Illinois Anthropology”) in my home department, where students and the course’s co-instructors—my delightful colleagues, Virginia Dominguez and Ellen Moodie—further provoked my thinking with their incisive questions.

For support of my year in Lisbon, I am grateful to the National Endowment for the Humanities (for a Summer Faculty Award) and several units at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (the Research Board/Humanities Release Time Award; International Programs and Studies/William and Flora Hewlett Award; the Research Board/Arnold Beckman Award; and the Department of Anthropology and the UIUC campus/sabbatical leave). For my current research in New England, I am grateful to at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Research Board and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Expert transcription and translation of my interviews, and a variety of other forms of research assistance, has been ably provided by Bryan Anderson (Urbana), Jose Carlos Cabral (Lisbon), Tholani Hlongwa (Urbana), Renato Lima de Oliveira (Urbana/Rio de Janeiro), Laura Marks (Urbana), and Giulia Mazza (Urbana).

For the rich welcome they have offered me to their lifeworlds, I am grateful to too many Cape Verdeans to name in Lisbon, Santiago, Mindelo, Providence, Boston, Paris, and elsewhere in the Cape Verdean diaspora. A special obrigada to Gershom, Gabrielle, and Yehuvah Barros for hosting me, an initial stranger, in Providence, Rhode Island, for week-long stays in what has quickly become a home away from home thanks to their extraordinary hospitality. I owe a further debt to the many Cape Verdeanist colleagues who have generously shared their contacts, advice, and wisdom with this newcomer to their professional world. Among these, Luís Batalha, Catarina Costa, Marzia Grassi, Fernanda Pratas, and João Vasconcelos deserve special thanks for their extraordinary support and friendship.

Finally, for introducing me to the many pleasures of the lusophone world, from Cesaria Evora to grilled sardines and port wine, I offer my deep and enduring obrigada to my husband, Philip Graham; and for plunging with grace into an un-asked-for year in Europe and emerging far more fluent in Portuguese than I can ever hope to be, I have more admiration for our brave daughter Hannah than I can say.
