Sleep

Obviously, you should try to get a good night’s sleep the night before your interview. But pre-interview anxiety may make this difficult. For this reason, I advise applicants to get a full eight hours of sleep for the entire week before an interview, making it less likely that one night of sleep deprivation will negatively impact your performance.

Plan to arrive to your interview at least 15 minutes early

If the program instructs you to arrive for your interview at 9 AM, be there at 8:30 AM or 8:45 AM at the latest. Make provisions for rush hour traffic, especially if you are in a city. If you are in a new place, it is also wise to take a “dry run” to the hospital so you know exactly where you are going and how to get there. Academic medical complexes are large and often difficult to navigate. Make sure you know where you are going. If you are late for any reason, be sure to call the residency coordinator (you will, of course, have the phone number on hand) and let them know.
