Chapter 21

Taking a deep breath, Aurielle closed her eyes for a moment. Today had been too much for all of them but Cassius the most. On the day of his father’s funeral, he’s subjected to an assassination attempt.

All that Fenno and the investigation team could get out of the maid was that an anonymous source had pushed a note through her mail slot, a clear attempt at blackmail. She had to poison the king, or the unknown figure would reveal certain things that she wanted kept secret. Upon further interrogation, they learned that she was having an affair with a married elf who would end her life if the truth was revealed.

They searched her place and found the note and the instructions. There was little more that they could do when they had no idea who this individual was. The maid had no idea, stating that she assumed that whoever it was had seen them together. It was the only way that they could know—she had told no one and knew that her lover wouldn’t either. Whoever it was also had to know that the information was worth a lot and that her partner wanted it kept a secret.

Aurielle knocked on the door before opening it. She believed nothing untoward would be happening, but she didn’t want to assume wrongly. Quietly, Aurielle was relieved. Fenno was sitting at the table with Ressanae, looking at the letter that had been sent to the maid. As she closed the door, Aurielle saw her son. He was lying on the bed with his head on Beth’s stomach, snuggled in tight. It appeared as if he was holding onto her as if she was his lifeline. Beth had a book in one hand, the other gently stroking his head. Softly, Aurielle sighed. This was not the Cassius she knew.

He was always so upbeat and sprightly. Everything just rolled straight off him, never soaking in, never remaining for too long. Now he was the complete opposite, taking everything in and letting it weigh him down.

Beth’s eyes lifted from the book; she closed it and gently shook Cassius’s shoulder.

“Your mother’s here.”

“That’s nice,” he murmured.

Aurielle moved to the end of the bed, gripping the wood. It pained her to see Cassius like this. Of course, she understood it. Her day had been spent comforting all of her children. The older ones understood easily and shrugged it off as if it was nothing, but the younger ones didn’t understand.

“I know that it is an extremely difficult time for you but you need to attend the banquet tonight. All of you do.”

“And what shall I eat, Mother?”

“The maid is no longer here.”

“But she is just the delivery system, not the person that wants me dead.”

“Actually, it wasn't poison,” Fenno offered as he crossed the room.

He held out the bottle to Aurielle; she sniffed it and her eyes widened.

“Goodness. Rakea?”

“A liquid version of it, yes. A drop is all that is required to make him into a bigger fool than a jester.
