Chapter Thirteen

Jack

The first thing I became aware of was the steady drip of water, the sound making very little sense. The ground was particularly hard. And extremely cold too. I didn’t even have the comforting warmth of Sebastian wrapped around me. Where was Sebastian? And why was it so cold? There was a funny smell too, my lungs filling with a mixture of urine and damp every time I inhaled. Why the hell had we camped here? And why couldn’t I recall where here was? The last thing I remembered was…

I opened my eyes. Not that it made much difference given how little light there was. Was it the middle of the night? An attempt to sit up was met by a wave of dizziness. Persevering, I managed to lever myself up bit by slow bit to a seated position, my back against a wall.

″You were out for the count when they brought you in. You’ve been out for hours. I thought he’d hit you so hard you might never wake up.”

I automatically turned my head toward the croaky voice, finding a tall, skinny man crouched nearby, his long, straggly hair and beard making it difficult to pinpoint his age. “Who hit me?” But I was already remembering the dash through the forest followed by the impact of Pierce the Brute’s fist as it drove into my skull.

I lifted a hand to probe my forehead, the lump the size of an egg and sore to the touch. From what the man had said, that had been hours ago. Ignoring the incessant pounding in my head that accompanied each beat of my heart, I clambered to my feet. I was in a cell, one wall entirely made up of metal bars. It was a fairly small space, that I apparently shared with one other occupant. There wasn’t much else in the cell apart from the man, a ratty blanket, and a bucket which I assumed served as a latrine, its contents probably accounting for the smell. “Who are you?”

The man pulled the blanket over his lap. “Name’s Efrain. You?”

″Jack. How long have you been here?” I went over to the bars while I waited for his answer, pressing my nose to them in order to be able to see better. The cell was at one edge of a fairly large space, the poor light due to its distance from any of the lit torches mounted on the walls. The walls were rock, which led me to believe we were in some sort of cave. Wooden furniture, which looked like it had been liberated from a number of different sources, none of it matching, was dotted around. A table here, chairs there. There was a fire pit at its center, which seemed to act as a focal point for the bandits. Most of them were sat around drinking while a few played cards. One of them threw knives at a target. I couldn’t see a door, the far side of the room just seeming to disappear into shadows.
