CHAPTER 10

LIVING THE LIFE

"Gabe! "Where have you gone?" Laura let out a cry, her heart hammering fiercely against her chest. She felt as if someone was suffocating her, making it difficult for her to breathe. All she wanted to do was curl up into a ball and wait for help to arrive. She felt the chilly air hug her, causing her pale, icy skin and hair to tingle. Her body was flowing with sweat from every pore.

She discovered the basement door was ajar after she had somewhat composed herself. The chilly breeze that enveloped her sprang from this. She could clearly recall shutting it and perhaps using a key to lock it as she entered. She started to wonder who had opened it, and it dawned on her right once that whoever had unlocked the door must also have been behind Gabe's absence.

With each thudding step that felt slower than the last, she hurried out of the basement. Time seemed to want to take its sweet time coming to her kid. She eventually made it through the basement and entered the parlor with great bravery, but Gabe wasn't there. She was certain that no one could break in and escape at the same time without setting off the alarm since the door leading to the lawn was still closed and had an alarm.

Running ahead to his room, she discovered just emptiness there.

"Gabe?" Her voice drifted off, sounding more like a string of sobbing.

All she saw when she surveyed his room were the Lego constructions that Gabe had been working on earlier. Her chin muscles trembled as she gulped on quiet cries.

"Who are you? Give me my kid and prove yourself! How did you handle him?" She tossed the inquiry to her son's empty room. She received nothing back except quiet. Heat curled her lips like a snake and lapped at her pallid cheeks. Everything started to shut down gradually. "Inhale," her mind said. On the other hand, she was unsure about her thoughts. Tell everything to Xander over the phone? However, she was afraid he would quit and return, most likely to continue bugging her. She decided to discard the idea.

While she was still considering her options, she heard a snap sound and a hissing sound coming from the kitchen. Without pausing to think, she raced into the kitchen, where she saw that the gas was on and that a pot was sitting on top of it.

The knowledge that someone was in her home struck her like a bus, causing goosebumps to cover her skin as if ice had replaced her spine. Her eyes widened to a cerulean blue. Perhaps it was worry or terror; in all honesty, she was unable to distinguish between the two. Her breathing stopped, and she made a trembling fist with her fingernails buried in her hands. She needed to know, but it was better not to open it since she was too scared to. She tiptoed near the pot, opened it, and let out a weak breath.
