Notes
1. Speaking of elasticity, see Bassâs seminal work on expanding the therapeutic frame (2007).
2. An example of these everyday, minor enactments can be found in a case I supervised of a patient whose anger at his abandoning mother was now also experienced in relation to his analyst (for similarly not alleviating deep feelings of loneliness). Due to tremendous anxiety and guilt about angry feelings, the affects were dissociated and only able to be conveyed via the patientâs unconscious communication and received by the analystâs unconscious as attack and diminishment. This in turn resonated with the analystâs own bad objects and led to feelings of failure and shame, followed by partial withdrawal from the patient. Because we were mostly able to deconstruct these dynamics in supervision via examination of my superviseeâs countertransference responses and other elements of her subjectivity in relation to this patient, a full-scale enactment (Bassâs Enactment, 2003) was avoided. Rather, eventually, the minor collision (or enactment, if you will) was worked through in the transferenceâ countertransference without the turmoil and impasse characteristic of what many of us would probably think of as a more typical, full-scale enactment. I will offer an example of this latter type of enactment at the conclusion of this chapter.
3. As Ferenczi (1932/1949) taught so long ago, when those charged with our protection and care disbelieve the abused child, a secondary, possibly even more lethal blow is rendered.
