Chapter 15
âIs it true?â Drummondâs voice sounded solemn at the end of the line. âThe girlâs dead?â
It was going to be a long conversation. Price regarded what remained of his bacon-sandwich breakfast with a pang of regret and reluctantly pushed the plate to the edge of his desk. âI saw for myself.â He tucked the phoneâs receiver into the crook of his neck and stretched out a hand for his coffee. âIâd been out for a drink with Kathryn and I was just about to head for home when the call came through. We grabbed a cab out from Penzance to Penwithen. Kathryn came with me.â He hadnât been sure how the evening would end. But he knew that standing in the churchyard of St Felicityâs, gazing down at Emma Needhamâs lifeless body, hadnât been one of his preferred outcomes. âDavid Lancefield found her. He was out walking the dog and it dragged him into the churchyard. He was pretty shaken up, but he didnât waste any time in calling us out.â
âWas it an accident?â
Price snuffled a cynical laugh into the receiver. âWhat do you think?â He sipped on his coffee. âSheâd been strangled with her scarf and her body had been arranged over the top of Lucy Lancefieldâs grave.â
âFully clothed?â
âIt wasnât that sort of crime.â Price wasnât sure yet just what sort of crime it was. âBut Iâd be interested to know what you make of it. Maybe Iâm too close to the Lancefields to see clearly.â He swivelled his chair gently to and fro. âLucy was strangled with her scarf. Itâs the same method.â
âIt could be a coincidence.â
âOr you could wait until Iâve got the end of the story.â Price struggled to keep the irritation out of his voice. âYesterday, anonymous flowers were found on Lucyâs grave. There was a card attached to them with one word on it: âwhoreâ. We put it down to the ongoing hate campaign against the family.â He paused to give Drummond time to catch up. âWhen Emmaâs body was found, there were fresh flowers on the grave beside her but this time the cardâ¦â He hesitated, still disturbed by the memory. âThere was a card with the word âslutâ written on it. But it wasnât attached to the flowers this time. It had been inserted into Emmaâs mouth.â
âEnnor⦠mateâ¦â Andy Drummond sounded suddenly remorseful. âI didnât take this Lancefield business seriously enough, did I?â He fell silent for a moment and then asked, âWhat can I do to help?â
âWe havenât informed the family yet. We could do with a liaison point at your end.â
âConsider it done. Iâll speak to Kate Jenkins. Weâd better inform Barbara Gee as well, sheâll need to know.â Drummond was silent for a moment, and then he asked âWhat about Jason Speed? Is he okay?â
âThat depends on what you mean by âokayâ. Heâs safe. Kathryn came with me to The Lancefield Arms, to inform him of the death.â If he closed his eyes, Ennor could still see the
