David accelerated his fancy âfour-by-fourâ vehicle on Route 1 leading from the Ben Gurion International Airport towards Tel Aviv, his mind completely devoid of any thoughts.
All he wanted right now was to return to his private fortress, to enter his apartment at the height of the Northern Tel Aviv tower, to rinse his body in hot water and go into bed for the rest of the day.
By now he has already started to feel in his entire body, the pains caused by the violent takeover performed by the airport security officers when he ran in amok back to the terminal area to look for the anonymous woman at the border control station.
His eyes that were focused on the road, caught her standing on the side of the road waving her hands at him for help, as he realized it was a small private car standing on the side of the highway with a red warning triangle placed on the road several meters behind him.
Without giving it much thought and despite the awareness pounding in his head about the safety hazard inherent in stopping on the side of highway, he began to slow down.
By now he decided to stop next to the woman, who looked to him like a businesswoman dressed in a reflective safety vest, which concealed a tailored business suit underneath.
She smiled at him kindly in gratitude while he stepped out of the car and walked towards her, as he reviewed her unfamiliar face. She was a good-looking woman with a small pointy upturned nose, who seemed to be in her thirties.
Only now he realized, that in fact this was the first time in the last ten years that he had stopped on the side of the road to assist a stranger and he turned to her staring at her green eyes asking in an official tone what seemed to be the problem.
He realized quite quickly that it was a simple flat tire on the front right tire of the small vehicle, and hurried to take out the car jack and the cross-iron metal lug nut opener..
âLucky for you Iâm on my way home and not in a hurry to get somewhere, and that is why I stopped to help you,â he said with a smile as he unscrewed the tireâs nuts.
âLuck is an inseparable part of our lives, you know,â she said behind him in a soft voice.
Her words amused him as she continued her monologue: âThere was even a saying at the beginning of the nineteenth century attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte, the mythological ruler of France, in which he stated that he prefers to have lucky military officers under his command during battle.â
He looked at her in a questioning giggle and a faint smile, while trying to understand what she meant by the historic quotation she made, as he skillfully continued to replace the tire.
He already heard the expression âNapoleonâ being flung at him in an insulting way when he was young, due to his short stature, as well as due to his unstoppable desire in many cases to be at the center of various social events.
