Chapter Eighteen

Harent leaned over to me, smelling a little of pine and sawdust, leaving me wondering what he had been doing before we had come out here. His voice was hushed as he leaned in, dropping to a whisper. “I’ve got the entirety of this section surrounded. What’s the plan?”

“The plan is to go in,” I said, keeping my gaze locked on that street section. I had been focused, using the Investigator fabrication to try to pick up on the sense of power from the powder inside the room, and had not noticed any movement to it, nor had there been any change.

So, for that matter, I suspected there was nothing to do but go in.

“Are you sure about this?”

“I want to get this over with. We’ve got enough going on with protesters and everything else happening in the city that it doesn’t make sense to leave this.”

“I’ll have a couple of men follow you.”

“Not you?”

“You don’t need a man my age slowing you down.”

“You’re still capable,” I said.

He shrugged. “Let’s just say that fighting isn’t my strength any longer. Nor is it something that I want to do. Besides, I’ll ensure that whoever goes in with you is capable.”

I had little doubt of that. If there was one thing I knew about Harent, it was that he had ensured his people were fully trained.

“Ellie wanted to come with me, as well.” Standing on the other side of the street, she kept looking around. I kept waiting, thinking there would be some sign of it, yet I did not feel anything else. “So she will stay behind me, and your men will stay behind her. They can watch our backs.”

He nodded. “All right. And the rest of us will ensure nobody else gets out.”

“I like the plan,” I said.

With that, we started forward.

I was ready when I reached the door, Ellie in tow. My heart hammered a little, and I couldn’t shake the excitement about the activity. It was foolish, I knew, because we were heading into something potentially dangerous, but I still felt that undercurrent of excitement about heading in and seeing what we might find. I paused momentarily with one hand on the door and focused, testing for the power there.

Ellie leaned over. “What are you doing?”

“Getting ready,” I said.

“Do you need to take that long?”

I snorted. “Probably not, but I am gathering my thoughts.”

I withdrew my shorter fabricated blade, focused on the power inside myself, and used it to pry open the door.

Then I darted forward. I held onto the blade and focused on what was inside the room. I recognized the faint tracing of power, but it was subtle enough that I could not pick up on much else. The room was dark, and though I felt the undercurrent of that power, I didn’t feel anything else, and certainly nothing—and more importantly, no one—else here.

“I don’t think anybody’s here,” Ellie said.

“Why would they have gone?” This came from one of the constables behind me. The man was tall, though not quite as tall as me, and of a larger build.
