Dear Eli,

I know I will see you again later this week to continue my tutelage, but this cannot wait until then. I need your help. My friend Bridie has vanished. She is one of the maids at Larkspur Manor, and also my best friend in the world. My father says she was taken ill suddenly with Riftsickness while I was away at the palace, but I don’t believe a word of it. Bridie has been as healthy as a horse every day since I’ve known her, and I refuse to believe that she could have stepped out to run an errand in perfect health, only to be taken so ill in the city that she had to be carted off to a Riftward at once. It doesn’t make sense—and of course, I understand enough about Riftsickness now to know that isn’t at all how it works.
