Chapter Seven

Emilio

Soulmates.

From the way Rowen said the word, Emilio could tell it was more than a traditional shifter mating. It had a weight to it, full of expectations and commitments and other things that should have sent him running away. He’d long since learned when a person started talking about forever afters when they’d barely had their meet-cute, that was a sign of a stage-four clinger at best.

At worst? Well, at least Emilio didn’t have any bunnies to worry about. Being famous for his entire life had come with a whole lot of really shitty lessons.

But the moment Rowen said that the might be somehow fated for each other, Emilio had felt an overwhelming sense of right. It explained so much, from how he’d been unable to stop thinking about Rowen for weeks to the absolutely seamless way Rowen had fit into his and Lina’s life.

Which was why, until Rowen explicitly told him he wasn’t interested, Emilio was going to woo the hell out of him. If gods and soulmates really did exist, there was no way Emilio was going to pass this chance up.

Fortunately, as reluctant as Rowen had been to even agree to dating in the first place, he sure didn’t drag his feet once it was decided. He even managed to arrange for his oldest brother, a doctor of some kind, to watch Lina for the evening.

Not to be outdone, Emilio nagged Hotch into taking a break from his interview tour as Valleywood’s hero of the hour to help him score a reservation at Aria de Mare.

“You know,” Hotch grumbled when he called Emilio back to confirm the time, “the studio pays for a PA to do these kinds of things for you.”

“Torsten’s a nice guy, but this isn’t something I want to hand off like a hair appointment,” Emilio said. “Plus, when I mentioned needing to make arrangements for a date this weekend, he suggested Vanis Greek Cuisine.”

“Isn’t that place a front for the mafia or something?” Hotch asked, sounding appropriately horrified. Probably at the idea of having to spin an explanation for the inevitable photos of Emilio, the reformed bad boy, in a known criminal establishment.

“More like the Valleywood version of Fight Club,” Emilio said. “And no, I’m not telling you how I know that. But, yeah, that’s when I decided to change tack.”

“I’ll talk to the studio about replacing him,” Hotch said. “The producers would probably have a whole litter of kittens if TMD—”

“Don’t worry about it,” Emilio said. He paused when someone knocked on his trailer door, calling out that they were leaving a delivery outside. “I get the feeling Torsten might have a case of fanboy-itis. He doesn’t deserve to lose his job over it.”

Hotch fussed at him a little, but gave in. They both knew that, in the long run, there was no sense in kicking up a fuss over a temporary employee. Especially when Emilio was still working on rebuilding his reputation in the industry. Once they disconnected, Emilio went to get whatever had been left.
