CHAPTER EIGHT

The two traveled onwards. As the days went by, there were fewer and fewer trees blocking their way. Raths decided that every time they stopped, he would spend the night in his human form, on the other side of the fire, giving Stha her space. I think she’s starting to feel the desire to couple, he thought. I know that it’s driving me insane, but for her, it’s probably even worse because she can’t do anything about it.

It was true. Raths was able to feign the need to urinate in the bushes to go off and relieve himself in other ways. Ways he hadn’t utilized since he was a youngling before his first kill, but it kept his aggression down.

Stha was becoming more and more withdrawn as the journey continued at it’s slow pace. It seemed like an eternity since she last laid eyes on her stone temple. She missed Sthan’s soft laughter, the sound of the children playing in the courtyard, the smells of a Dharmin cooking on the open fires of the kitchen; all of those familiar things were fading into a distant memory. She could just run off into the forest and fend for herself and be done with it.

For some reason, she didn’t want to give up just yet. There was a nagging feeling deep inside of her that kept her from just taking off. Her anchor was Raths and her people. Her people needed her. It was nearing two weeks since they took off and the trap was about to be sprung on Raths' unsuspecting tribe. Dragons were supposed to be huge, with the ability to fly, so maybe he could help them return in time to save them all from being destroyed by the usurper of her tribe.

As Stha jogged, she felt something gritty under her foot. She looked down and saw patches of sand on the ground among the sparse trees. The temperature was getting hotter and dryer as well. She felt a moment of jubilation; they had finally made it to the edge of the jungle to the desert! Now, she had to find the Elder Dragon.

The Dragons were an incredibly long lived race of people. From the legends she had heard as a young girl, they lived thousands of years, if not longer. Some even say that the Elder Dragon had been around since the creation of the world and even spoke to the Gods themselves as they chose the people to bless with the power of shape shifting.

The problem was, she had no idea where to look for the elusive wyrm. She poked her head out from behind a massive tree and saw mile upon mile of golden dunes sprawling ahead of her. Raths stood beside her, his amber eyes wide with amazement.

“So, where do you think he could be? Nothing even indicates there could be a cave. It’s all sand, and that’s it.”

Stha looked at the endless expanse of desert and felt a crushing disappointment. He was right. There were no mountains, no rocks, nothing.
