It didn’t take her more than 20 minutes to pitch her idea and I have to admit, it was one hell of a wildcard play she had come up with.

September 6th, 2018

It had taken us 17 days to get to this spot on a small hill overlooking the massive valley that held the town of Wright. I’d belly crawled to the top and used the binoculars to see what I could see. Wright was still about 40 miles away and even with the high-powered optics, I couldn’t make out much. With the sun setting behind us, this was as close as we would get today. None of us wanted to try and make contact in the dark. Too much possibility of things going wrong from the get-go.

I continued to scan our surroundings and could find nothing out of place, nothing to indicate that anyone knew we were here. After the sun slipped over the western horizon, I replaced the caps on the binoculars and crawled back the way I came. The going got faster once I was clear of the small ridge and I was able to stand and walk back to the group that was waiting for me. All the while, I couldn’t help but wonder if every part of our plan was in play. Had teams Salem and Tundra made it to their places? Had all of us remained undetected on our journey?

It had been four days since we were last able to pick up the transmissions from the ranch and we were truly flying blind now. The last we’d heard; nothing had changed as far as the intelligence had gone. There had been no enemy columns sighted by any of the outposts. Nothing was moving as far as they could tell. That did little to calm my nerves, however. As Bill had pointed out, there were huge gaps in the net they had cast. In fact, it kinda added to the anxiety. Afterall, we’d come this far and stayed totally out of sight of anyone. The last human contact we’d had was when we left the ranch.

I kept telling myself that it was too late to let the nerves bother me, the die had been cast and here we were. In less than 24 hours we’d know if the gods of fate had smiled on us or if they were laughing at us. There was no turning back now. Too many pieces were in play, the ball was rolling.

“Rick, Ryan,” I motioned both of my squad leaders over. Once they were standing in front of me I began to speak. “You guys know the drill. Set camp for the night. It’ll be a cold camp tonight. No fire and no lights,” I turned my attention to Rick. “First squad rides out at 0300. As we discussed, we’ll leave the pack horses with second squad along with the extra supplies. Make sure everyone that goes to town tomorrow has everything they need in their packs or on their person.
