I woke to a light rapping on my bedroom door. Axel groaned as he rolled closer to me on the soft mattress.

“What?” I called out.

“Prince Hakon,” a voice answered. “Master Grelen sent me to get you.”

I bolted upright in bed, dislodging Axel and making him groan in objection.

“I’ll be right there.”

Footsteps retreated on the other side of the door, and I tickled Axel’s sensitive ribs. He laughed, fighting me off until his eyes popped open.

“It’s time. Let’s go.” I couldn’t keep the excitement out of my voice. We were close, so fucking close to healing Lochlan. I would imbue the seawater, then we just needed to wait a week. A mere seven days before we could give my brother the cure.

Axel sat up and pulled on his boots, while I did the same on my side.

“I wonder what side of the bed Elia sleeps on,” Axel said around a yawn.

The comment caught me off guard, and my fingers slipped from my boot, smacking me in the chin. “Where did that come from?” I asked.

“I was just dreaming about her. She was sprawled on a bed, but she was smack-dab in the middle. No one sleeps in the middle of the bed. Everyone has a side.”

I rolled my eyes. “We’ll ask her when we get her back. First, we need to see to Lochlan.”

“I know,” he said. “How do we even start the search for her?”

Rubbing at my sore chin, I shrugged. “I don’t know yet. But we will find her.” Renewed strength and hope were coursing through my veins, telling me we were close to resolution on multiple fronts. It was as if the answers regarding Elia were right in front of me, hidden behind some kind of mist or fog. If I focused long enough, could I figure it out? We had some pieces of the puzzle, but I was missing something big.

Axel and I arrived at the healer’s den minutes later and pushed through the small wooden door.

“Ah, good! The paste is ready for the seawater. Prince Hakon, if you would? Or if you prefer, I can do this one,” Grelen offered. Dom was nearby, looking into the cauldron curiously.

“Not a chance, Master Grelen.”

I stepped forward, and Axel followed. I looked into the pot, finding a disgusting colored paste on the bottom. There wasn’t very much of the substance, but the multiple bottles of seawater nearby meant it would bolster the amount.

“How much?” I asked.

“All of it. I set aside the ones we don’t need now in case this crops up again. These jars will do it.”

Master Grelen unscrewed the tops, and I reached within myself, finding the endless sea of magic just waiting to be used. I pulled, and the water from the bottles spun through the air between us, arching in streams and dancing over the pot as I infused my will and intention into every droplet.

The water twisted in the air, shimmering in an icy blue hue as I directed the streams to the cauldron.
