Richard Clark

It’s just past 11:30 a.m. and Richard feels like he had been driving for close to an hour. In reality, it had only been about fifteen to twenty minutes. He had been spending the majority of his time swerving around abandoned cars and charred remains of cars.

Whereas, most people would be upset and bothered, to say the least, about the traffic of which consisted of the abandoned cars, Richard simply smiled as he swerved around them. He was making his way back to Highway 18 leading up to the mountains, having to backtrack from his previous destination.

Richard had decided to head into the mountains. He had heard great stories about Lake Arrowhead from his higher-class buyers. He had also heard that many of the houses were vacant most of the year because they were owned by the rich and famous.

He contemplated about starting a fresh and new free life in a huge house in Lake Arrowhead. He would make Holly his wife, his first wife at least. And if anyone got in his way, he would deal with them accordingly. In short, Richard was excited to have a new beginning to look forward to. He found himself grinning as he swerved around the burned out and abandoned cars.

Oh sure, Richard was still extremely pissed off that he was not able to kill his rat. But after a lot of yelling, a lot of screaming, a lot of smashing nearby objects, and also after having his way with Holly (again) in the backseat of his truck, followed by a couple of fresh and smooth cigarettes, Richard was feeling better.

Seeing the chaos that now devoured Southern California, Richard was confident that no one will be looking for him anytime soon. He was also confident that he would be able to blend into this new world, and that suited him just fine.

Richard swore to himself that he would never answer to another man again. Sure, he was high up in the food chain of his previous organization, but he was no lieutenant and he was certainly no boss.

Yes, things will be different this time around. Richard saw this as his opportunity to start fresh. No one to answer to. His rat was dead, he may not have been able to do it himself, but he was still dead, nonetheless.

Richard found excitement with the thoughts of all the new possibilities this new world, his new world, would bring him. He was already free, his problems were no more, and he had even found himself a pretty young fiancé. In Richard’s opinion, he was doing just fine in this brave new world.

Approaching the exit for the Old Highway 18, Richard notices that there are roadblocks on both sides on each end of the freeway. Moreover, on both the on-ramp and off ramps. Richard slows the truck and parks in the shadows underneath the overpass.

Richard scans the area making sure that he's alone. He looks over to Holly. “All right girlie. Let me see your hand.
