Chapter Eighteen
âShe still wonât even try the rat,â Andrik answered.
Alfred laughed. âI thought it was the easiest one.â
âIt is, but she wonât do it. Sheâs mastered the bat and the owl. She wants very badly to master the fox, but sheâs still struggling with that one.â
The date for their meeting had been set, in fact, even before Nora had made her decision to be transformed. When Andrik and Alfred had discussed it, the new vampire had wondered at the hunterâs confidence. How had Alfred known that she would transform? There were many things about the man which had baffled Andrik in the beginning. In spite of the experience of knowing him, he was no less perplexed. Did the man possess a form of mind control? Andrik kept the question to himself.
âEvidently, she wasnât very athletic before,â commented Andrik. âIt has been a very rewarding experience watching her train. Every accomplishment is a victory.â
âIs she feeding?â Alfred asked.
âSheâs doing better with that now. She wasnât keen on it to begin with. She tolerated it, mostly.â
âI can only imagine,â said the hunter dryly.
Andrik watched Alfred as the latter frowned. It was obvious to Andrik that he was stirring something around in his head. After a few moments of silence, Alfred appeared to have come to a decision, nodded, and spoke.
âI want to send her to Limehouse,â he announced.
âLimehouse?â Andrik asked. âDidnât she come from Limehouse?â
âIndeed.â
âWhat mission might be carried out in Limehouse?â
âIâll come up with something,â Alfred responded. âThe important thing is that she has the opportunity to see the slum with her new set of eyes; a confidence booster, if you will.â
Andrik considered the significance of returning Nora to Limehouse. During their brief time together, he had learned of Noraâs past vocation, learned of her addiction and learned of how Alfred had rescued her from her attacker. âIs it wise to send her back in there considering what she might do if she comes across Edwin Burberry?â
âI think it will be a great test for her actually.â
âSheâll kill him,â Andrik responded.
âThatâs the test.â
âYou want to see if she can kill someone?â
âNo. I want to see if she can refrain from killing someone.â
âThatâs quite a risk to take, donât you think?â
âI doubt it,â Alfred responded. âI think she will bring the man in, perhaps not without injury, but I donât think sheâll kill him.â
âTurn him in here?â
âOf course.â
âThen what?â
âWe shall see.â
Andrik was certain that it made little difference what his personal position was concerning the mission. Alfred had made up his mind to test Nora by sending her back to Limehouse. He was probably right. Nora would probably be able to maintain self-control. He just wasnât ready to deal with the after-effects if she ended up killing the man.
âWeâre probably going to need to send the two of you on a mission very soon,â Alfred began. âWe have Miko on the case now and heâs hearing about some troop movements. If we can anticipate where, when and how many, we might be able to get ahead of the Crimean problem before it collapses.
