(Above image) First view of Earth inside the purple-hued cocoon of Saturn’s plasma bubble.

(Previous image) An artist’s conception of how Earth would have first looked to an alien space probe while the earth was a satellite of proto-Saturn, a sub-brown dwarf approaching the Sun from the Sun’s celestial south. The dark purple-hued and evenly shed light of Saturn casts a nocturnal gloom over the entire surface of Earth resulting in a permanent duskiness for the whole planet. Of note are Earth’s prominent bands of aurora in its northern and southern latitudes, and also the existence of an equatorial ring, similar but much less dense than the rings supported by Saturn today. The image shows the southern land masses of an enlarged Australia and the now sunken continent of Zealandia, then above sea level due to Earth’s lower ocean levels at that time. Both continents support thick reddish vegetation, while those parts under the auroral bands (today part of Tasmania and New Zealand’s South Island) suffered a shadow resulting in icy conditions that contributed to what we now call the Ice Age.
