Chapter Twenty-One

~

T he journey to Gameton was anticlimactic compared to the last time Jack entered the city through the tunnels that Jorey had shown them. Jack wouldn’t have wanted to emerge from the tunnel into one of Norris Everlight’s warehouses like they did before.

There was a moment of anxiousness when Jack and Penny entered the eastern gate to the city. Jack didn’t want to be surprised to learn the curse worked on him. He relaxed a bit after he didn’t immediately die when he entered Tesoria’s capital city.

“Where to?” Jack asked Jorey.

“Not the same house we used before. Heber gave me a contact who is a housing agent. We will rent what is available on the market. With the situation in the city, there are plenty of houses newly available as some residents are skittish about the current situation and have left the city for a while, even though there aren’t armies inside the capital.”

“I’d be skittish too,” Helen said. “Gameton has the same feel it had when we were here before. People are too stiff and nervous looking. Yellowbird didn’t feel like this.”

“What if Gameton has always felt this way?” Tanner said.

Helen grunted. “You know better.”

Tanner laughed. “I do, but I want to show you that I’m not stiff or nervous.”

“That is a chronic condition for you, not being stiff or nervous,” his wife said.

Jack had listened to the exchange and decided they weren’t really arguing. He agreed with Helen, despite the fact they had only been in the city for a few streets. Jack would describe the city as tense rather than nervous, though. It was as if everyone expected something bad to happen soon.

Jorey took them through the city streets and down a block of respectable, but not fancy buildings. Jack could tell the bottom floors were for businesses, and there were flats in the upper stories since the windows had different treatments and colors. It was more like walking through the Fourth Ring of Dorkansee.

“Here we are,” Jorey said. He looked at Farah. “If we are playing married people, you should come in with me.”

That brought a genuine smile to Farah’s lips. “I would be happy to do so.”

They disappeared into the office labeled Benson Bastion - Land Agent.

Jack looked around the street. People were going about their business, but the tension was still in the air. He didn’t feel the fear that abounded during his last trip, but there was an anxiety as if everyone was waiting for their doom.

“I feel exposed,” Penny said. She dismounted and sat on a bench in front of Benson Bastion’s place of business. Jack could feel the tension build inside of her.

Jack took Penny’s hand and traced her fingers. He thought about the change in her demeanor, but he couldn’t sense mundane magic very well. Then the truth hit him. “It is a spell,” Jack said.

“What?” Penny asked.

Jack held Penny’s hand. “Clean,” Jack said forcefully but quietly.

Penny leaned into Jack. “Oh.” She looked at him with clear eyes. “Can I wear one of those rings?”

“When we find a place.
