âThere are better rooms in the main wing,â said Tom.
âIâm sorry, I wasnât snooping,â Grace said.
âReally?â Tom said crossly. âBecause it kind of looks like you are.â
âPerhaps a little.â Grace stood up and punched Tom playfully on the arm. âWe followed the puffinâs footprints. It must have come here last night. Have you noticed anything missing?â She looked down at Tomâs frayed cuffs and noticed his jumper had a hole in the belly.
âThereâs no need for fancy clothes on the island,â Tom said, spotting her glance. âAnd no, thereâs nothing missing.â
âI didnât mean to stare,â Grace said. âI was just thinking I like the red of your jumper. Itâs like raspberries.â She looked up at the castle. âDo you mind if I speak to your parents? Perhaps theyâve noticed missing items or discovered the portal.â
âIâm afraid they ⦠went fishing early this morning.â
Frowning, Grace looked out to sea. She didnât want to leave the island until she had at least one new clue or piece of evidence. âPerhaps I could wait for them,â Grace said.
Tom looked down and frowned again. âThey really donât like visitors just turning up on the island.â
âThen they will be very interested to learn that a puffin thief has targeted them,â Grace said with a nod of satisfaction. âIâll stay out of your way until theyâre back and just have a look around. Unless â¦â Grace trailed off, thinking. She had been so busy being a warden lately that she missed hanging out with friends, and this boy seemed a little lonely. âYou could show me around a bit?â
Watson flew back and landed on her shoulder. âNo sign of the puffin,â he said. âMaybe it slipped past us back into the portal last night. Perhaps when I rested my batteries for a minute.â
âOr it might still be here somewhere?â Grace said, raising her eyebrows.
âI think Iâd know if there was a thieving puffin on the island,â said Tom defensively.
Grace brushed down her uniform. âIf thereâs one thing Iâve learned so far as a warden, itâs that criminals can be crafty. Even puffins.â She smiled at Tom. âSo how about that tour?â
He shuffled his feet for a moment. Grace wondered if he went to school on the mainland and if he ever had friends come and visit him here.
âMaybe just a quick tour,â Tom said, his face brightening. Grace thought he must be warming to having them on the island.
Tom led Grace around the edge of the castle. She noticed he was glancing at her nervously and realised she hadnât really explained who she was and what a warden did. So she told Tom about their map and why the puffin and the portal theyâd discovered was so strange.
âSo your great grandma invented the map technology?â Tom said.
âYes, she did it when she was young and developed it during her life,â Grace replied.
âIt must be really cool to be part of such a great family.â
Grace swelled with pride, as she really did think she was the luckiest person in the land.
