Annie noticed that if she tried to stay focused on the moment, she could more quickly “come back” from a triggered response. She also learned to find different levels of engaging with her kids. At the end of the night when she was tired, she would often make some popcorn and snuggle with her kids while watching a movie. On the weekends when she had more energy, she would try and find activities they could do together to refocus herself after a PTSD triggered response. During opportunities to have deeper conversations, she would ask her kids about their friendships, their current interests, and their own goals for the future. Over time, she noticed that her kids were being more open with her, sharing details about their day and interactions at school. This helped her feel like a good mom and also made her feel more confident that if something stressful was going on for her girls, she would know about it.

Now Reflect: When have you practiced alternative coping? What new habits might you be building that are bringing your life back in line with your values?
