Outcome

Marina received a two-year probation order for her conviction for concealment and a condition to attend for psychological treatment. She continued to maintain that she had not committed infanticide, although as her therapy progressed she acknowledged the degree to which she remained confused over the events immediately following the delivery of the baby, whom she named Laura Jane. She also began to relate the details of the rape and to describe her sense of being passive, powerless and invaded. This seemed mirror her experience of pregnancy, which she had therefore found painful to acknowledge, even to herself. In therapy she was able to make some sense of the experiences which she had undergone and to address the trauma of her rape. She never accepted her possible culpability for the death of her baby and remained horrified by the memory of its birth.
