RELATIONSHIP AND THE SOCIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE
Taken in conjunction with the social-cultural perspective of Rankâs thought generally, the indicated relationship view of the specific phenomena and processes of interaction which concretize it in therapy and personal development, tends to bring Rankian thought notably into line with the direction of development represented by modern social psychology. The latter has similarly been marked by an emphasis on relationship in tracing out the functional interrelation of the individual and the social-cultural factors in personality and behavior.66 This point thus brings to a head the essential difference of focus which characterizes Rankian as compared with Freudian thought and at the same time suggests the broadened psychosocial implications and possibilities of the Rankian position. These, however, regrettably remain only scantily developed in Rankâs works, insofar as systematic presentation is concerned, even though his later interest led increasingly toward elaboration along these lines.67
In his Will Therapy, Modern Education, and especially in his Art and Artist, nevertheless, these implications and possibilities are more specifically developed and thus we see that, whereas Rank primarily continued the pattern and interest of Freudian thought, he passed far beyond the limitations of his original background and opened up possibilities of harmonious integration with related areas of thought and investigation, such as few positions associated with psychoanalysis present. In fact, it is not until we come to the recent work in the same direction by such present-day reinterpreters of Freud as, for example, Karen Horney in some of her later reformulations of Freudian doctrine, that we get a similar integrative approach to personality and behavior in relation to the social-cultural environment developed from the psychoanalytic standpoint.68
