In both cases, it is quite clear that the aggressive act was not precipitated by direct anger towards the victim. In fact, in most instances the torturers did not even know the names of their victims, or even the accusations against them. It is also clear that a torturer cannot bear the physiological and psychological cost of being “angry” every day, many times a day. Accepting the banality – that is, the trivial nature – of evil (a process discussed at length in Chapter 8) is the last resort of his defenses.

However, there is a third scenario that does seem to involve anger, although it is neither as common nor as straightforward as the first two:
