While Emmons’s categories of strivings are not identical to the types of desires we have been associating with love, “intimacy strivings” certainly include the lover’s desire for union with the beloved, and “generativity strivings” include the lover’s desire for the good of the beloved. While these findings from empirical psychology support my central argument, they merely reinforce the general claim that love benefits the lover. The more important and difficult question is the one that we’ve been exploring, how does love advance the lover’s well-being?

Finally, an examination of Martha Nussbaum’s discussion of love as a eudaimonistic emotion is relevant to this discussion of final ends. She argues that emotions like love have a direct connection to one’s personal conception of eudaimonia. She claims,

A conception of eudaimonia is taken to be inclusive of all to which the agent ascribes intrinsic value: if one can show someone that she has omitted something without which she would not think her life complete, then it is a sufficient argument for the addition of the item in question.22
