The Labyrinth

“What are you planning on doing for winter break?” asked Jake.

Gabriel opened the door for Jake and they headed to their academic course that morning. “I think I’m going to fly home for the week. Spend some time with my family.”

“I’ll be hopefully getting some quality time with my gramma. She isn’t doing too well,” Ruby said.

Serena patted her on the shoulder. “I’m going to spend it with my mom.”

Jake sighed softly. Once again, he would spend the holiday alone, as his dad was on location for another business trip and his mom was who knew where. He didn’t want to complain. Everyone had enough on their plates. Not to mention the big midterm. All December long, their instructors had referred to the massive exam coming up before the winter break. They said it would be an exam like nothing they had faced before. A real test of what they all could accomplish.

The cadets all filed into the classroom as the instructors counted some forms at the front. As class began, Adjuk and Hassan started passing out forms to all of the cadets.

“Class, this is an interest survey that we have the cadets fill out every year,” said Adjuk.

“Please take some time to fill these out. It helps us continue to make this program better and more comprehensive,” added Hassan.

After they finished their surveys, the class began discussing tactics. They went over protocols for different scenarios and how to best proceed when a mission was going poorly. As class drew to an end, Hassan reminded the cadets, “Make sure to prepare for your midterm OTS. It’ll be a big one.”

As the cadets all left for the day, their imaginations racing with the idea of what their midterm exam could be. Gabriel and Jake were no exception. “I bet we have to fight giant robots!” said Jake.

“No way,” said Gabriel. “Besides we’ve already fought robots before.”

Jake laughed. He had almost forgot about the cyborgs type things they fought during the Zero incident in college. “So, I guess we’re going to do fine with that.”

Just then, Toro rushed over to them. “What do you guys think we are going to have to do for this midterm on Friday?”

“Jake says it’s robots,” Gabriel said, rolling his eyes.

“They said it was something we wouldn’t see coming,” said Jake. “Why not robots?”

“I wonder if it’s going to be a combat mission or a more academics-based one,” said Toro.

“I hope it’s combat. I can’t take another detective operation,” said Jake.

Gabriel laughed. Although the recon and subtle missions weren’t his specialty either, he didn’t mind them as much.

Before they knew it, Friday was upon them. The cadets were ushered back to Little Cairo for their next OTS mission, the biggest one of their year. As they got into position, they saw the instructors standing in a row.

“I hate when they do that,” said Serena. “I always feel like they are about to spring something horrible on us.”

Ruby and Gabriel both nodded in unison. “Ditto.”

“I think they’re definitely about to spring something terrible on us,” said Gabriel.
