The thing Darcy hadn’t considered, was how complicated it would be to do a spirit communication in their house, now that Jon’s dad was here.

Her kids both knew to leave her alone when she was doing her thing. Jon was still worried for her, whenever she so much as mentioned a spirit communication, but he trusted her and her abilities. Tiptoe knew to watch over her when she went into a trance. The entire household knew how to deal with this part of her family gift.

Micah Tinker, however, knew nothing about it. She and Jon hadn’t told him about her being able to see ghosts, and Darcy thought that was for the best. He hadn’t earned that level of trust from them. Not based on the things he’d done in the past, and certainly not from what they had seen since he got here.

Which meant they would have to come up with some excuse for Darcy to close herself up in her bedroom for—potentially—hours on end while she made the connection with the spirit world and contacted the ghost of Ambrose Morton. That was going to complicate things for everyone.

Darcy had a much better idea. One that she planned on putting to the test later.

For now, she was happy to sit with Jon at the kitchen table and read through the personal papers of Ambrose Morton.

Technically, she supposed, she shouldn’t even be looking at this stuff. It was evidence from a crime scene, after all. Jon didn’t mind because he truly valued her opinion when it came to solving mysteries. Plus, they had taken care of the issue years ago by making her an official consultant to the police force. If anyone ever questioned why the police chief’s wife had access to crime scene photos, autopsy reports, and papers like the ones spread out in neat order between her and Jon at the kitchen table, she would just whip out her laminated “consultant” card and wave it under their noses.

The last person she had done that to was their favorite reporter frenemy, Brianna Watson. That had been nearly as satisfying for Darcy as the time she punched the woman in the face.

Almost.

She and Jon had taken turns reading through Ambrose’s speech, surprised to discover it was unfinished. The handwritten pages, all numbered, ended at page four. Considering how old Ambrose was, he had a firm and steady writing style full of strong lines and looping letters. It was almost artistic. Cursive was becoming a lost language, but thankfully Darcy came from a generation that could still read it.

Halfway through a sentence at the bottom of page four, the stream of consciousness just came to a stop. He obviously had more to say. It just wasn’t here.

So where had it gone, and who took it?

The first four pages were pretty typical for a speech being given at a town’s birthday celebration. All about how great Misty Hollow was, and how the people living here were simply amazing, and how proud Ambrose was to be a part of it.
