I could feel Ben’s disbelief through the phone after I wrapped up our experience with the mayor. Razzy leaned in close so she could hear him.

“I just don’t believe it. Replace the chief?”

“I know. He was really gleeful about it, too. I mean, we knew he was planning a special task force, but this is something I didn’t expect. What should we do?”

Ben let out a deep sigh.

“Are you going to tell your boss?” Razzy asked, breaking the silence.

“I don’t know, sweetheart,” Ben said after another pause. “He has a right to know, but this is an awkward situation. I probably should give him a heads up, though.”

“I agree,” Razzy said, licking a wayward piece of fur from her ruff. “No one deserves to be surprised like that.”

“I’ll bring home the folder tonight,” I said. “In the meantime, I’d like to do a little looking into the mayor’s background. I don’t want to get distracted from this case, but I have a weird feeling about this guy. Do you think it’s possible he was involved in Alan’s death? I mean, I know it sounds nuts, but it might be the push he needs to get his guy installed as chief.”

“You know what? Stranger things have happened. I don’t think it’s likely, but anything is possible. Speaking of Alan, his wife called the chief while I was in his office this morning. She wanted to know when she could expect the death benefit.”

“That poor woman. I hope she’s doing okay. I wanted to interview her, but I didn’t want to intrude too much on her grief.”

Ben made a strangled sound in his throat that made Razzy and I glance at each other.

“What’s wrong?” Razzy asked.

“I don’t want to speak out of turn. But strictly speaking, I think if you want your interview, I’d get it now. She’s planning on leaving town. It’s all pretty irregular. Even the chief couldn’t help but notice the red flags. She’s now a person of interest. It’s awkward, since she’s a widow, but something was definitely off in the way she was talking.”

“Really? Well, that adds another layer to this story. If you think it’s okay, I’ll go see her now.”

“Be careful, Hannah. You too, Razzy girl.”

“You three,” she said, purring into the phone.

“See you at home,” I said, chuckling as I ended the call. “Okay, Razzy. Let’s look up Wendy Jenkins’ address and see what we can find out.”

The Jenkins’ house was on the other side of town. I considered calling her first, but decided it would be worth gauging her reaction by surprising her. We pulled to a stop in the suburban neighborhood.

Razzy stood up on her back legs so she could see out of the window. Her little face was serious as she studied the houses.

“What are you thinking?” I asked, stroking her back.

She let out a little chirp and turned to me.

“It’s a pleasant neighborhood. Too nice. She’s a nurse, and he was a cop, and we know neither of those professions are paid what they deserve to be paid.
