The fashion model’s slim and sleek points

coincide with all my weak points.

When Playtex ignored the poem, she sent another to entice the company into responding:

Growing old gracefully’s

Less of a hurdle

Since science perfected

The three-way stretch girdle.

This time, Playtex surrendered, at least in part. The Mold ’n Hold model would not be resurrected, the communications director wrote, but he sent her the five girdles of that type that Playtex had left in storage. Mom was elated.

Now, years later, the five girdles had fallen into various states of disrepair and decomposition. Mom used four of them for parts. That is, she cut them up as needed to fix the fifth. Anytime a split developed in the good girdle, she would cut a small section from one of the four others and iron it onto the split until the material melted together.

The process was similar to repairing tires, and with the same risks. Mom always worried that if the patch wasn’t seamless, she could suffer a blowout when she least expected it. Wanting to look her best for Dortha’s visit, she waited until the last moment to make her repairs.

Mom also took the rare step of capturing Charley and enclosing him in the back porch. That way, she wouldn’t have to run after him if he flew out of the front bushes as Dortha approached the door. “It wouldn’t make a very good first impression if I tried to introduce myself at full speed from ten yards back,” she said.
