Talia watched in horror as Jack entered the ring, hands bandaged beneath those gloves. Lucifer stood past the ring, leaning against one of the banner poles. He wore jeans, no socks, beat up tan loafers, and a faded black T-shirt with the SanFran Confidential logo on it.

Laughing as he uncrossed his arms. Watching her squirm.

With the wave of his hand, time froze.

She stormed out of the princess box, shuffling through the frozen figures until she reached the roped off circle where Jack and Gianni stood frozen. She walked through the ring, pausing to reach out and caress Jack’s bruised left cheek. He hadn’t put on his face mask yet. It dangled in his left hand, bandages hidden beneath the fencing gloves. They were fencing gloves, but not meant to grab hold of a razor-sharp sword and stop it from killing a man. A weapon that wasn’t even part of the show’s equipment rack until this morning.

Until it showed up in Jordan Bellamy’s deranged hands.

“It’s been such a festive day, hasn’t it, Talia?” he said, grinning with that deadly smile.

She was so tired of being afraid of this dangerous madman. Tired of his lies and manipulations. Tired of his cheating and treating Jack like dirt under his cloven hooves.

Lucifer hated angels that still had their wings, but he hated humans more. And he delighted in harming them. Always the sore loser. He couldn’t stand losing a wager. Or being beaten by a winged angel.

“You cheating scum!” She rushed at him and shoved him.

He laughed harder, those light blue eyes sparking with excitement.

“I love it when you indulge your temper, my little angel of death. We’re going to have so much fun in Hell! You’ll get on famously with all my demons. Especially as you watch them torture your dear, brave Jack’s soul.”

She had to stop herself from lunging at him.

“Can’t win a wager without cheating, can you, Lucifer?” she asked, hands on her hips.

“How is it cheating when the humans do what they do best? Lie. Cheat. Steal.” He motioned over her shoulder at Jack. “Fooling around with his ex while your back’s turned.”

Talia’s anger flared. “What are you talking about?”

Lucifer settled himself against a massive live oak’s tree trunk, poking the grass with the toe of his loafers. “Didn’t you hear about Rachel Daniels leaving his room last night? In nothing but lingerie. It was quite a scene or so I heard from the other contestants talking about it.”

“You’re lying,” Talia snapped, her heart twisting into a knot. Had Jack slept with her last night? “You’re always lying.”

“Yes, he is,” said Jennifer Collins, stepping out from behind the live oak.

Her form shimmered and Anahera stepped out of the illusion. Talia grinned. She’d been getting in close to protect Jack by posing as Jennifer for short moments. How much help had Anahera given her? And Jack?

“Another one of you?” Lucifer rolled his eyes. “Aren’t you supposed to be striking or something?”

Talia raised an eyebrow. “How’d you know about that?”

Anahera shook her head, short red locks falling onto her forehead.
