âZeke?â A soft voice interrupted my beautiful rest.
My head lolled side to side. Someone was shaking me.
âZeke? Youâve got a get up. Zeke? Come on.â
Cancer. Cancer was calling to me. And she was desperate.
Behind the thick blanket over my brain, I came to, realizing she was alive and semi-well at the same moment I understood where I was. Gravel bit into my back. My lips were sealed together with dried blood, the iron tang filling my mouth. Dust irritated my nose. Everything hurt.
I cracked my eyes. Worry painted Cancerâs expression, her mouth turned down, as she hovered over me. Dark worry lines interrupted her usually smooth skin. Then she smiled, her round cheeks glowing. âThere you are,â she said, trying to sound confident and failing.
I extended my arm. âYouâre not getting rid of me that easily. Help me.â
She grabbed my hand and tugged gently. âSlow. Sit up slow. Give yourself time to adjust.â
The world spun as soon as I was in a seated position. Even pressing a hand to my head didnât lessen the sensation.
âWhat happened?â she asked. âI donât remember a thing after the van hit us. By the way⦠what in the heavens did you do?â
Instead of answering, I jerked around in panic. The world swam, the ground tilted toward the sky. I gripped the ground like my life depended on it to brace myself. As it was, Cancer saved me by the shoulders.
âWhat did I tell you?â she said, sounding very much like a mother. âTake it easy.â
âNeed to find Creed,â I said in a croak.
âItâs right there,â she said, pointing from over my shoulder to a spot in the gravel a few feet away.
Sixty feet around the halberd, the gravel was stripped to the dirt. Creed lay, collapsed. Bodies, all dressed identically, lay prone further beyond.
I held out my hand. âCreed.â
The halberd stood upright on one end, wobbled slightly, then lifted off the ground and flew to meet my open palm. Creed was cold. The spinning world slowed.
I got to my feet. âWeâve got to get out of here.â
âI need to check on them first,â Cancer said. âI donât know what you did, but they look worse for having met you.â
âGood.â
Cancer scurried from person to person. I did a quick count, noting the victims. The ex-demon who identified me as one of his kind and the chain-wielder werenât among the group. Surprise was not the name of the game. The ex-demon must have recognized the threat Creed was and promptly protected himself. This problem was going to have to wait. I could barely stand on my own feet.
âAre they okay?â I asked Cancer.
She moved to the fourth victim and stopped. Tucking a poof of hair behind her ear, she fell to her knees. âThis one needs help,â she said sharply, the type of intensity reminiscent of watching her save limbs and life in her Baghdad clinic.
I inched closer. âWhatâs goingââ
I didnât need to finish my question. The pony-tailed man was in serious trouble.
When Creed acted in self-defense, it had done what it always does with its shock wave.
