Just Stop

Lawrence came to my apartment one evening, and we had a long talk about the grave implications of living in the past. “The past is a series of memories. We can change the way we feel about our memories as we change our point of view. My child, you must help people to see the negative results of living in the past. This can lead to nothing but despair and, if taken too far, imbalance or insanity. One of the major causes of people’s lack of joy lies in their relentless demand to be unhappy because of past injustices. This is comparable to a dog chasing its tail. I believe that most often the antidote for this malady is just to stop, whenever you see yourself allowing the mind to dwell on the past. Stop, breathe deeply, and think of a beautiful image. A sunset, the sea, a mountaintop, a laughing child, a crackling fire in a hearth—anything that you choose. The mind can hold only one thought at a time. It’s a bit like the alchemist who transmuted cheap metal into gold. The past image of injustice can be replaced by a present beauty. Simple, yes, but very effective. Try it!”
