Biella pulled Kane back in through the window frame and slammed him up against the stone wall.

“What did you say?” she cried, still clutching him around the neck. Kane coughed and spat a wad of bloody saliva onto the floor, where it splattered against Biella’s bare feet. She curled her lip in disgust, and struck him across the face.

“Speak!”

Kane groaned as blood leaked from one nostril, pooling on his upper lip. “I know where the Fraternity are holding Marshals Dayne and Karmen,” he said, his voice an unhealthy rasp. “I can tell you where they are, and can even assist in their safe return, if only you’ll let me go.”

Biella let out a sharp, scornful laugh. “That’s just pitiful, even for a servant of House Lambda! Do you really expect me to believe a word you say? And you’re in no position to bargain; tell me where my parents are and I might let you live… for now. Releasing you, after your attempt on my life, is another matter—”

Shouts came from the courtyard below, and Biella glanced toward the window frame. She hoped the falling glass hadn’t hurt anyone. Kane’s hand twitched, and she snapped her attention back to him, seizing his wrist in her bionic hand and squeezing. He squealed in pain and opened his hand.

“I’m unarmed,” he cried, “I swear!”

“A good assassin is never unarmed!” Biella snarled, raising her fist again.

“Try not to hit him too hard, my love,” Voss said from behind her. “He needs teeth in order to talk.”

Biella looked round and glared at him… but broke into a smile as she realized what he had called her.

“So, we’re lovers now?”

Voss grinned back. “Hadn’t you noticed?”

“Ahem,” Kane coughed. “As delightful as it is watching your romance blossom, I’ve already heard—and seen—enough of that for one day, so could we get back to the matter at hand?”

“You’ve… you were watching us? For how long?”

“I arrived in your bedchamber before you did,” he said, a sly grin creeping across his blooded face.

“You… That’s disgusting,” Biella snarled. She slapped him across the cheek and his head snapped to one side. “You’re disgusting!”

“I’ve been called worse,” Kane muttered, earning him another slap.

“Marshal!” came a muffled cry through the door as the handle continued to rattle. “What’s going on in there? Are you alright?”

Biella rolled her eyes at the constables’ lack of progress. Could they not have found some heavy furniture to bash the door down?

“Let them in, Voss,” she called over her shoulder. “They seem to be struggling.”

“I…” Voss hesitated, looking down in alarm at his nakedness, then up at Biella’s.

“If you’re shy, then put your clothes back on!” Biella snapped. “Then open the fragging door!”

Voss hastily obeyed, tugging on his underthings and hurrying to the chamber door, where he swiftly overcame whatever Kane had done to the lock. He pulled the door open and a pair of armed constables burst in, anxious but determined expressions on their faces. Biella considered berating them for their incompetence, but before she could speak, they seized Kane from her, forcing him to the ground.
