Light's Out
Do you know where the gates of death are located?
Have you seen the gates of utter gloom?
The Book of Job 38:17
Brant
This part of the city was quiet. He could still hear the distant alarm, but his escape put him on the opposite side of the city from Jeroen's quarters. Brant hoped to return there and join up with the rest of the men they'd left. They stayed to guard Tantem and wait for their return.
His unfamiliarity with the city left Brant with no choice but to travel in the direction he hoped was right until he saw something he recognized. The winding streets were a maze, but Brant kept the mountains on his right as he passed from street to street.
"Hold! Where are you off to after curfew?"
Brant was so focused on the street ahead of him, he didn't see the two guards coming towards him on the side street. He brought his sword in close to his body to conceal it if they hadn't spotted it already.
A curfew. No wonder the streets are so empty.
"On my way back to my quarters. I'll be off the streets soon." He didn't stop or even look their way. Brant hoped they wouldn't want the hassle and would let him go.
"I told you to hold. Stop where you are or face the consequences."
It'll be better if no one knows I passed this way.
Brant came to a halt and turned towards them, but kept the sword at his side, away from the guards.
"Curfew's sundown. I assume you don't have permission to be out or you would have heeded my first call."
The two men moved closer to him, but were cautious as they approached. Both had their hands on their swords at the ready.
"I'll ask you again. What are you about?" They stopped about two strides from Brant, waiting for him to respond.
"I lost track of time visiting friends. I hoped to hurry home before anyone noticed."
The lead guard took a step closer and drew his sword, holding it out towards him. "You wear the armor of the Dark Brotherhood. I think you better come with us back to speak with the captain."
He'd heard enough. Brant lifted his left hand up as if in surrender, drawing the man's attention to it as he swung his sword around. The blade caught the guard in the arm, causing him to drop his weapon. Brant knocked him down and moved past him. He brought the point of his sword forward, ramming it into the chest of the second guard. Turning quickly back to the first man, Brant jumped on top of him, pinning his arms down and placing his hands on the sides of the man's skull.
"I'm traveling to meet with the Guild of the Helm here in the city. Which way do I go?"
Fear filled the man's eyes and his lips trembled, but he didn't respond.
Brant squeezed the man's skull, producing a wail of pain.
"Don't kill me."
"Which way?"
"Follow the road we came from to a large square with a fountain, then turn right.
