Chapter 25

My left side felt like it was on fire, which I suppose it had been. Not only that, but there was also a deeper pain, something throbbing and pulsing inside my abdomen. My head was swimming, and as I drew myself back to consciousness, I realised I was in Jennifer’s office, sat in one of the mismatched armchairs.

I tried to sit up, and pain shot through me. “Argh, god dammit!” I exclaimed, then a thud came from the hallway and a few moments later Bryce appeared at the door. He had ditched his waistcoat and wore a white shirt. At least it was white before it was covered in blood.

“Oh God, Charlotte, don’t try to move,” he came up and pushed a cold towel into my side.

“Fuck. Shit, fucking, bollocks that hurts!”

“Just hold still, we’ll, ummmm, get a doctor, or oh god,” he stammered and began pacing the room. Trying to keep my eyes on him just made my pain worse.

“Stop, stop moving, just stand still will you,” I tried to weakly grab at him. “My, my stomach. Something, throbbing really deep.”

“I… I had to… I had to seal your wound. But…” He wasn’t making complete sentences and he wouldn’t stop pacing, and somehow that was more frustrating than dying.

I strained, “Bryce!” I exhaled deeply and then had trouble catching my breath again through the pain. “Bugger, I think. I think I’m bleeding internally. Where’s Elly? She should. Be here.”

“The shop was empty. There’s no one else here,” he said. I tried to think where Elly would have gone, and why it had to be now she wasn’t around. “W-w-w-w-what do we do? Why am I even here, why did I have to follow you? Why did you follow me? Oh fuck, the club…”

My head was swimming. I knew I had to act, treat the wound in some way before death took me. The thoughts ran through my head, spinning round and round, and Bryce’s stammering and pacing were doing nothing to help my focus. There was a healing draught that would work, but it wasn’t meant for internal wounds, and I was in no shape to make it. I needed to tell Bryce, get him to take me to the lab. I just needed to say the words. Why was it getting so difficult to talk?

“B-Bryce,” I said softly. “Need to go to the lab.”

“What, no you can’t move,” he said obstinately.

“Bryce, take me to the lab, or I’ll die.”

He hesitated, but I looked him dead in the eyes and he sighed before coming towards me. “This is going to hurt,” he took my arm and tucked his shoulder into me and pulled me up to carry me. I grunted in pain but did my best not to scream. Moving to the lab was one of the most prolonged painful experiences I had ever had. I felt like my guts were going to burst out of my side.

Bryce put me down in the chair next to Jennifer’s Alchemy table.
