Visualizes Himself as Winner

It happened at the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, scene of the 1965 United States Open Golf Championship competition. Posted on the large leader board were the names of the greats in golf, all winners of previous U.S. Opens.

A man stood looking up at that board with its list of distinguished winners. The last name was Ken Venturi, who had won the coveted prize the year before. There was a blank space reserved for the as-yet-unknown champion for 1965. But the man gazing at that leader board, a golfer from South Africa, saw a name in that blank space. And the name he saw was his own—Gary Player.

He had already won the British Open in 1959, the prestigious Masters in 1961, and the coveted PGA cup in 1962. But until now the U.S. Open had been elusive. When Gary Player took that stellar competition, he would become the third man to win the “Grand Slam” of golf, the two others being Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan, immortal figures in the realm of golf.
