Chapter Eleven

OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, Marleigh was very careful. She didn’t know if Jett was watching her or not, but she wasn’t taking any chances.

She regretted not being able to take Winston outside, but she couldn’t take that chance. She kept waiting patiently for Gertrude to call her so she could meet her and look for Temperance’s diaries.

Of course, she’d been spending nights with Winston and she knew for sure that she was falling in love with him. How could she be falling in love with someone that wasn’t even real? What would they do even if they were able to figure out the way to break the spell?

Winston wouldn’t have any birth records or any way to even prove who he was and most likely, he would be deported. Deported to where though? There wouldn’t be any records of him anywhere, at least no recent records.

She decided that perhaps she could go to the library and do some research into Winston’s past, based on the information he’d given her. Maybe she could find out what happened to him after the portrait was painted. After all, he’d told her that Temperance had said that he’d lived a full life. Did he have children? Grandchildren? Great-grandchildren? The thought was mind boggling.

She’d taken a half day vacation from her job and was now sitting in the library, combing through records of Britain and her country’s relationship during Winston’s life time.

She knew he’d been born in 1874 and the portrait had been painted in 1895. He’d told her he’d wanted to be a correspondent while in Her Majesty’s service, but he wasn’t sure if he ever was.

Marleigh decided to do a search by his name and found nothing. What did she expect? There wasn’t a lot of information on British soldiers unless they had some ties to America. Still, Winston had said his father’s brother was the Duke of Newcastle. She then decided to search that name on the web to see what she could find.

She got a surprise when there was plenty of information on the Dukedom and she began to read all she’d found.
