Chapter 27

Ruth sat down as she prepared to hold a North Wales Police press conference. She was already aware that several major UK newspapers were sniffing around to see if Jake Neville’s murder was linked in any way to the story he was writing on Eastland Energy. The Times had already run an article plus a small obituary as Jake was a journalist at the paper. Ruth had also heard the news of Jake’s death being a murder investigation reported on BBC 5 Live as she and Georgie had made their way back to Llancastell CID.

Looking out at the assembled reporters, Ruth took a moment. Despite media training and holding over a dozen press conferences, she still felt uncomfortable.

Sitting next to her was Kerry Mahoney, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer for North Wales Police, who had come up from the main press office in Colwyn Bay. Ruth had met her various times and found her to be a rather supercilious, judgemental woman.

Mahoney raised an eyebrow and then leaned over to show Ruth a tweet on Twitter.

‘Looks like you’ve got your work cut out on this one, Ruth,’ she said. ‘The top brass are going to be looking for you to make an arrest in the next couple of days or they’ll be breathing down your neck. Obviously, I’ll do everything in my power to keep the media side of things as calm as I can.’

Ruth glanced at the text.

Sources claim that North Wales Police are treating the death of 29-year-old investigative journalist Jake Neville as murder. Neville, who worked for The Times newspaper and lived in London, had travelled to North Wales to research a story about a proposed nuclear power plant north of the picturesque town of Llangollen, a well-known tourist destination.

On the table in front of Ruth was a row of microphones. She cleared her throat. ‘Good afternoon, I’m Detective Inspector Ruth Hunter of North Wales Police, and I am the Senior Investigating Officer in the murder of Jake Neville.’
