For some days now Ernest had felt like the only person really caring for Mother, and the only person who saw the blasted apothecary for the master manipulator he truly was. Yet as he looked down at the frail, once regal lady who convulsed and grimaced with pain, he could feel no choice but to comply with her wishes. Yes, she pleaded with her words, but it was the panic and fear in her eyes that rendered him defenceless. His irregular footsteps echoed against the cold, stone walls and suddenly it hit him that he was very much alone in his thoughts, support and position. Ernest slowed and steadied himself with one hand on the brick, catching his breath, both from age and realisation.

“Ivy,” he muttered to the shadows. Where was the child? Who was caring for her? Who was preparing her for her responsibilities when… when… He coughed the thoughts from his head and once more took up his enforced task.
