TEN

Drea

The sky was filled with stars. As if by some design of Kade’s, the river was also calm and the boat rocked gently against the waves. It was going to be one of those nights to remember.

They were going to have dinner on the deck.

She felt her insides vibrating with excitement.

Immediately after arriving from the factory, Kade had begged her pardon and got engaged in a long phone call. She’d taken a soak in the tub. She hadn’t been surprised to see him still on the call when she got out of the bathroom. Glad for the lull in activities for the day, she took a nap.

He didn’t need to go the extra mile with the table for two, wine and music and she ought to be suspicious. Pulling up the zip of the sunshine yellow, knee length, bodycon dress she wore, she told herself to stop thinking so much and simply enjoy the night.

She slipped on a pair of sandals. She resisted the urge to add some makeup to her face and contented herself by adding a touch of nude lipstick. Her hair was particularly difficult to tame today, probably because of their proximity to the river and she only gathered the wild curls into a ponytail. With one final check in the mirror, she declared herself looking presentable enough for a casual dinner.

As she left the room, she stamped firmly on her thoughts. Her inner devil was making a mockery of her, asking her why she’d chosen to wear the figure-hugging dress for a ‘casual’ dinner.

She fled the room as if the hounds of hell were after her.

And yes, dinner and music were waiting on the deck.

He must have made all the arrangements during her nap. He hadn’t been around when she woke and she’d gone to the deck to look for him only to find the surprise. He was just slipping the disc in the stereo when she saw him. She shuddered as she remembered the moment when the music started playing and his eyes met hers. It was John Legend’s ‘Tonight.’ She was no huge fan of his, but the song was one of her favorites. She wondered if Kade knew. As if by magic, her legs had taken her to him of their own accord and they continued to stare at each other.

The magic of the moment came to an abrupt halt by a rumbling sound.

Her stomach!

The aroma from the covered dishes tempted her senses and only then did she realize she felt famished. They laughed.

She turned to the table, eager to feed her hungry stomach.

She couldn’t stop wondering why she felt so excited over something as simple as dinner with him on the deck of a boat. She told herself to forget about why he’d arranged the dinner or the way he’d looked at her when she approached him on the deck while the music played.

“It’s only a dinner, Drea,” she muttered to herself, “a casual dinner between two responsible adults.”

Oh sure; that’s what I told myself when I spent the night at his house.
