Chapter Six

The hotel manager leads us into the stairwell and down to the lobby, apologizing profusely over and over gain. We get offered a free bottle of wine, a box of chocolates, and a free night’s stay in one of the Grand’s exclusive suites. Adam looks like he’s going to claim that one for himself, and I guess I should let him have it considering he let me use his nice suit jacket as a dirt guard for my dress.

We both take turns assuring the manager that everything is alright, that we’re not going to sue for mental distress or anything. By the time we make it back out onto the sidewalk in front of the hotel, we’ve missed the wedding and a good chunk of the reception.

“Should we show up mid-reception?” I ask. “I’m not really sure of the etiquette here.”

“How close are you to these people?” he asks.

“Close enough to be invited, but not close enough that they would definitely miss me if I wasn’t there. I feel bad that they paid for dinner service for us, but I texted a friend who’s there and we’ve already missed that anyway. I feel like a complete idiot.”

He places his warm hand on my bare arm, and his touch makes me shiver even though the evening air is balmy and warm. “You’re not an idiot, you’re someone with a lot on your plate.”

I look at him like I want to buy what he’s selling.

I sigh. “Not only did we miss dinner, but we missed our dance. I really wanted to see if you were any good at it.”

“I feel like I lucked out,” he teases. “Why don’t we get dinner anyway?”

We’re in the snazzy part of town where most of the businesses close early, even on the weekends. I glance down the street and see nothing but a bunch of dark storefronts.

“You know what I really want?” I say, glancing down at my easily stained dress.

“Pizza,” Adam answers. “From that window a couple of blocks over.”

“You’re a mind reader, Adam Portman.”

“C’mon,” he says with a smile, tilting his head in the pizza place’s general direction. We make small talk on our way to the window, and without even asking he orders me exactly what I want. One slice of pepperoni and one cheese. The owner and the other patrons look at us like we’re nuts standing in line for cheap pizza dressed like this, but I know for a fact that they’ve all seen weirder things.

We sit on a bench nearby and eat. I somehow narrowly avoid saucing up my bodice with an unruly string of stretchy cheese.

Adam eats my crusts, then we toss our plates and do a little bit of window shopping since it’s such a nice evening.

I take note of a few cute outfits displayed in boutique windows as we pass, but nothing really catches my eye until we reach a jewelry store with a beautiful, butterfly filled display out front.

I nearly put my hands up on the window to get closer to it, like a kid at a candy store.
